Sweet Fennel, Fenkle

Botanical (and family):
Foeniculum Vulgare.. Family Umbelliferae

Distribution:
Grown in France, Italy and Greece, but could have originated in Malta where it may have been introduced by monks or crusaders.

Description of plant:
A perennial bush, growing to 5 ft. with bushy green, leathery leaves and oblong fruits. It has very attractive yellow flowers.

Description

Extraction:
Steam distillation of the crushed seeds.

Charactersitics:
A pale yellow liquid with a very sweet anise-like, earthy-peppery scent.
TOP TO MIDDLE NOTE

Odour effects:
Powerful, sweet and cleansing.

Cautions:
Subject to toxicity with overuse, and skin sensitization. Avoid in pregnancy and epilepsy.

Fenchone – 5%
Bergaptene and Umbelliferone – 1 %
1,8 Ceneole – 3 %
Anisaldehyde – 0,5 %
Anisic Acid – 0,5 %
Alpha pinene, alpha thujene, limonene, myrcene, phellandrene – 2 %
Fenchol – 3 %
Trans-anethole, methyl chavicol – 62 %

Properties and indications:
MIND
Said to give strength and courage in adversity. Said to bestow longevity.
BODY
An excellent toxic eliminator, resulting from excess food and alcohol. Acts as a tonic to the liver, kidneys, and spleen. Clears poisons from insect bites. Seems helpful in dispersing cellulitis through its diuretic action. May dissolve kidney stones. Works well on stomach ailments. Eases indigestion under stress. Good for hiccups, nausea, vomiting and colic. Relieves constipation and flatulence. As an anti-spasmodic, it could be helpful with bronchitis and whooping cough. Can activate the glandular system by imitating the hormone oestrogen. Could be helpful with PMT, scanty periods, and low sexual response.
Increases milk in nursing mothers.
SKIN
Has a cleansing and tonic action and could help keep wrinkles at bay.
