Friars Balsam, Gum Benzoin, Gum Benjamin, Virgin milk. Arabic: Lubanjawi.

Distribution:
Native to Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand.

Description of plant:
Tropical tree to 20m, with pale green leaves.

Description

Extraction:
This product is pathological, in a balsamic exudate, which is then solvent extracted, mainly with alcohol.

Charactersitics:
An orange-brown viscous mass with a sweet, balsamic vanilla-like odour.

Odour effects:
Calming

Cautions:
Has a drowsy effect, influencing concentration.

Main chemical constituents:
Coniferyl benzoate, conifryl cinnamate – 70%
Benzaldehyde, Vanillin – 6%
Benzoic acid, cinnamic acid – 15%

Properties and indications:
MIND
Brings comfort to the sad, lonely and depressed.
Helps let go of worries, instils confidence and eases exhausted emotional and psychic states.
BODY
Warms heart and circulation, eases arthritis.
Tonic for lungs, for bronchitis, asthma, laryngitis.
Expel fluid waste (mucous). Aids urine flow, helpful with cystitis. Calms stomach, strengthens pancreas, so could be useful in blood sugar control. Could reduce mouth ulcers.
SKIN
Great remedy for cracked, chapped, dry skin, bad heels and for wounds and sores.

Other uses:
Used often as a fixative in soaps and fragrances.
