Native to Scandanavia, Siberia, Canada and Northern Europe.

Description of plant:
An evergreen shrub with a reddish stem, needle-like leaves, supporting small yellow flowers and blue/black berries.

Description

Extraction:
Steam distillation of the berries. However, an oil is also produced from the needles and wood.

Charactersitics:
A water-white, mobile oil, having a fresh, yet warm, rich-balsamic, woody-sweet and pine-needle like odour.

Odour effects:
Clearing and protecting.

Cautions:
Prolonged use may overstimulate the kidneys. Best avoided during pregnancy.

Bornyl acetate, terpinyl acetate – 1%
Caryophyllene, cadinene, humulene, germacrene – 6%
Umbelliferone – 1%
Caryophyllene oxide – 1%
Alpha-Pinene, Beta Pinene, Y-terpinene, p-cymene, limonene, sabinene, thujene, myrcene, camphene – 78%
Terpinen-4-ol, alpha terpineol – 5%

Properties and indications:
MIND
Clears, stimulates and strengthens the nerves.Supports and protects the spirit in challenging situations.
BODY
Valuable in cystitis and kidney stones. Can be good for cellulitis and fluid retention. Drives out toxins, especially relating to excess of alcohol and rich food. Clears mucous from intestines and could be effective against piles. Regulates the appetite and is a tonic to the liver. Helps to eliminate uric acid and could also be beneficial in regards to arthritis, rheumatism, gout and sciatica. Strengthens the limbs and can assist where there is stiff movement.
Regulates periods and eases painful cramps.
SKIN
A tonic for oily and congested skin. Purifying properties may ease acne, blocked pores, dermatitis, weeping exzema, psoriasis and swellings.

Other uses:
Diuretic and laxative preparations. Employed in spicy fragrances and aftershaves. The berries are used to flavour gin.
