The Selenium Research Institute is a non-profit, social-benefit company incorporated in South Africa. Our mission is to help facilitate and conduct clinical trials of selenium against various diseases in cooperation with national health authorities of African countries. All our clinical trials are approved by the relevant authorities within the ministries of health of the countries in which they are conducted and are supervised by qualified scientists, PhDs, and medical doctors. The results are then submitted for publication in peer-reviewed medical journals.
Howard Armistead, from Los Angeles, California, is the founder of the Selenium Research Institute. He has been HIV positive for over thirty years and has been an independent Aids researcher for twenty-five years. Today he is considered the leading expert in Africa on how selenium affects HIV disease. Mr. Armistead has designed a number of clinical trials, some of which have been conducted in Zimbabwe, Nigeria and Liberia. When Ebola struck West Africa in 2014, the Liberian Ministry of Health urgently requested him to come to Liberia to test selenium against Ebola. In an informal trial of forty-eight patients, six selenium tablets daily reduced the mortality rate from Ebola by 44.4%. This significant benefit needs to be confirmed in a subsequent trial.

Aside from standard anti-retroviral (ARV) therapy, selenium supplements have proven to be the most effective way to treat HIV disease. They are the fastest way to increase CD4 count and improve the CD4/CD8 ratio. Science has suggested that the way HIV causes Aids is by depleting the immune system of selenium so supplementing selenium can help reverse this process. However most people with HIV are not informed about this and their health suffers as a result. Understanding the fundamental science of HIV and how HIV causes Aids can greatly benefit those who are infected.

There are numerous diseases and health conditions that selenium can and should be used against but all too often, “more research is needed” and people are not informed of the research that has already been conducted. The purpose of the Selenium Research Institute is to conduct quality, controlled clinical trials in an affordable setting to determine how knowledge about the effects of selenium can improve health both in Africa and around the world.

We welcome your financial support to help us conduct much needed clinical trials that will improve our understanding of how to treat viral diseases like HIV, Ebola, influenza and West Nile virus. Your contributions will also assist our program to inform the public how selenium can improve the health of millions around the world, including you and your family.
We appreciate your support, but please note that donations to SRI may not be tax deductible in some countries.

OUR MISSION
The Selenium Research Institute supports and conducts research on how selenium affects various health conditions and diseases and disseminates that knowledge to medical practitioners and the general public.
