Salvestrols were discovered by Professor Gerry Potter, Professor of Medicinal Chemistry and Director of the Cancer Drug Discovery Group at De Montfort University in Leicester, and Professor Dan Burke, a pharmacologist and former Dean of Science at Sunderland University in the UK.
Both scientists previously worked on developing synthetic cancer drugs, including the breakthrough prostate cancer treatment Abiraterone. However, their research led them to uncover that certain plant compounds — Salvestrols — could deliver similar therapeutic effects naturally.
Professor Burke found that CYP1B1, a unique enzyme expressed in diseased cells, was highly susceptible to Salvestrols. When Salvestrols come into contact with this enzyme, they trigger a cellular kill-switch, leaving healthy cells untouched.
