Deer velvet, also referred to as antler velvet, refers to antlers that have been removed in the growth stage when they are covered in soft velvet-like hair. These antlers are dried and the ground powder is sold as a dietary supplement in Western countries to purportedly improve sexual function and overall energy, decrease stress, and strengthen the body.

Mechanism of action

By weight, deer velvet is approximately 50% amino acids. (5502) Deer velvet also contains vitamin A, estrone and estradiol, sphingomeylin, ganglioside, some prostaglandins and epidermal growth factor. (5518) Deer velvet is believed to stimulate the growth of body tissues, particularly the reticuloendothelial cells and leukocytes. It also appears to stimulate wound healing.

Deer velvet seems to reduce fatigue by improving sleep and stimulating appetite. It is believed to improve health, especially in children and the elderly. (5502).

Preliminary evidence suggest that athletes taking deer velvet experience increased muscular strength and endurance in training. They also seem to recover faster from muscle tissue damage that results from exercise.(5505)

Brain On Dosage
Start with a teaspoon powder or 2 capsules. If however no effect is noted, then take the dose daily until you achieve a desired effect. Passion Flower Tincture

The exquisitely beautiful Passion Flower, Purple Granadilla or Passiflora edulis – is a remarkable medicinal plant.

All parts of the plant can be used – the nervine in the seeds of the fruit are calming and relaxing, especially when taken in combination with cacao (passion fruit and cacao are also ridiculously delicious together!) The passion flower – and also the new growth tips of the leaves – are a potent aromatase inhibitor when prepared as a tincture in alcohol – and is the tincture that we sell as our African Forest Medicinals Passion Flower Tincture.

Aromatisation and Estrogen Dominance

Aromatisation is when androgen hormones convert into estrogen in the body, creating an excess of estrogen, or “estrogen dominance”. This can cause all manner of health problems related to high levels of estrogen in the body (including breast, ovarian, prostate and testicular cancers, as well as many less life-threatening, yet still debilitating, conditions).

Estrogen dominance is becoming more and more common the more we expose ourselves to “xeno-estrogens” – estrogens that are foreign to the body, but get introduced via pesticides, plastic food and water containers and air pollution. These estrogens block the estrogen receptor sites in the body and cause higher levels of estrogen to be circulating in the body.

Breast cancer is particularly common in women due to estrogen dominance – and passion flower tincture has been proven especially useful for post-menopausal women with hormone-sensitive breast cancer.

One particularly distressing condition that estrogen dominance causes in men is gynecomastia, or “man boobs” – and this is also a condition that our Passion Flower tincture can help to reverse or prevent in the first place.

Water Extraction of Passion Flower

If you take the same flowers and leaf tips and make a tea out of them, however, and a completely different effect is achieved – a strong sedative – very useful if you are having trouble sleeping or suffer from anxiety. As our tincture is extracted in 40% alcohol, this also means that there is a cold water extraction taking place at the same time (the other 60% of the liquid) – so a certain calming and sedative effect can be noticed from taking this tincture. Less so than a hot water extraction, but there nonetheless. Sensitivity to this will vary from person to person – but several people have commented on this effect from our tincture.

Other Phytochemicals in Passion Flower

The roots contain psychoactive cannabinoids – as do cacao and cannabis – although they are not as pronounced in the passion flower plant.

Passion flower also contains harmaline, an MAO-inhibitor, thereby acting as an effective anti-depressant as it blocks the re-uptake of serotonin and other feel-good chemicals in the brain, enabling their effects to be felt for longer.

We were totally blown away when we realized we had Red Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) growing wild in our backyard! What a treat!

A rare find

Wild Red Reishi on our doorstep!

We soon foraged further afield, and although we found a little more, we also found that this mushroom is indeed rare, unlike Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor) or Ancient Reishi (Ganoderma applanatum), both of which are abundant in comparison.

Also unlike a lot of the other species growing here, Red Reishi is an annual mushroom, growing on hardwood – in our case, Blackwood, or Acacia melanoxylon. It seems to favor older trees and loves old stumps, helping to break them down and create new life – but we have also found it growing on living trees too.

Wild reishi products are extremely rare as wild harvests are obviously limited – which doesn’t make for highly commercial products. But we believe the increased potency of wild plants as well as the energies they absorb from growing in a wild natural environment rather than in a grow-room or controlled outdoor area makes this a precious, powerful product of note – this really is Wild African Energy at its best!

Reconnecting with the wild

The joy of finding Reishi that has grown wild rather than been grown in a hothouse is that it has absorbed all of the energies of the forest, of the weather, of the astrological activity – and we believe that that is what makes it so special, because it is these wild energies that we then take into our own bodies when we drink wild Reishi teas or tinctures. This helps remind us of our wilder, more natural, less “domesticated” state of being and helps bring us closer to it.

Wild plants also have to be tough to survive as their predators are not controlled as they would be in a farming situation. As a result they are vulnerable to attack and they develop potent chemical defenses against such attacks.
